  • some stuff for august

The July whirlwind is over and somewhere in there we had a great vacation at Great Pond. The weather was a little juicy towards the end of the week but that gave us a chance to smoke a fistfull of stogies (me), soak up plenty of suds (not just me) and read a few great books (pretty much everybody!). I finished HUBRIS: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War, and that got me sufficiently pissed off. Then I grabbed Erin’s book she had just finished, Under the Banner of Heaven. That got me wondering about those wacky, fun loving mormons. Then Erin had a pile she picked up at the bookstore that included Man Without a Country. That just plain got me. I’d recommend ’em all and if this weather continues (juicily we float along) I have a few more on deck.

Anyhoo…you didn’t stop by to hear about my vacation…I’ve got some pics too!!!…Here are some upcoming gigs you might want to check out:

Thursday, August 14th Matt Langley/ David Tonkin Duo at The Christmas Dove in Barrington, NH. Yep, you read it correctly, David and I go retail with a visit to the Christmas Dove. David and I have been playing together for 30 years (that’s no shit) and we’ve played in a LOT of places but this is our first visit to the Christmas Dove in Barrington. They’ve been doing a nice concert series and we’re happy to be a part of it! More info Here

Friday, August 15th The Hip Pocket Orchestra at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. If you didn’t get a chance to hear us down in Rhode Island, this might be your last chance for a while to hear the HPO in public. This is an kickin’ band with the best vocalists in Boston, a slamming rhythm section and only the best horn section in the Northeast…that’s all. More info here

Thursday, August 21st Rob Dumais and Matt Langley at the Hilton Garden Inn, Manchester. We might be on the deck or in the lobby but either way, we’ll make some sounds you will want to hear.

Friday, August 22ndChris Humphrey Big Band at Atlantic Hall, Kennebunk, Maine. This is a benefit for the Myanmar Hurricane victims and the band will be swingin’ for a cause. If you haven’t heard Chris Humphrey you oughtta!

That’s it for now. I think all the other gigs in august are functions (sorry, I put ’em on my calendar so I’ll remember to show up. If you’re offended, I’m sorry I can’t remember what the hell I’m doing from one day to the next. Someday you’ll be an old fart like me and you’ll understand) Thanks for stopping by. Go out and support ANY LIVE MUSIC, ART, DANCE, LIFE… THAT YOU CAN FIND. Your heart and mind will thank you.

  • getting steamy

Heya. Summer is finally rearing it’s steamy head and I LOVE IT!. Bring on the heat and humidity! (within reason of course!!) June is looking kinda quiet before the July storm. Here are a few gigs to check out:
Friday, June 13: Rob Dumais Trio at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manchester. Nate Therrien joins us for an evening of jazz out on the deck overlooking the Manchester Fisher Cat Stadium. Unfortunately, the Cats are on the road tomorrow but the bright side is, we won’t take a line drive off the back of the head in the midst of the merriment. Come on on over and cheer us on.
Sunday, June 29: Hey….check it out…we’re back at the Hilton playing the baddest of trio jazz with Rob Dumais and nate Therrien and…wait a minute…YES…THE CATS ARE HOME! I gotta confess, I don’t really know the Fisher Cats from the Detroit Redwings, but it could be pretty fun, dontcha think? Jazz, hotdogs, beer, jazz, beer and baseball.

    Looking ahead to July…
Wednesday, July 2: The mighty Hip Pocket Orchestra comes out of the finest hotels of Boston to play a rare public show in Bristol RI. The singers in this band are incredible to say the least. The horn section? The best in Boston! The rhythm section KICKS ASS. If you’ve never heard this band, this is a rare opportunity! Need some details? MEE TOO…when I get ’em, I’ll be happy to pass ’em along.
Friday, July 4: Combo Sabroso time at Brazo. This is the traditional july kickoff with a wild dance party at Brazo. The food is incredible, the drinks, while pricey, are delicious and the dance floor packs ’em in early. Don’t miss it.
Monday, July 7: PMAC Jazz Camp starts up wtih Charlie Kohlhase and members of the Explorer’s club. We have a great time for two weeks working with a great group of kids. Can’t wait. Some of the kids will perform at the Press Room on Sunday, July 13th and then we’ll have a concert at the camp on Thursday, July 17th and then we’re at Prescott Park (weather permitting) on Friday, July 17th.
Monday July 14th: The David Tonkin Group at the Barley House in Concord, NH. Come on out for our monthly gig. We get a great crowd and frequently students and alumni from the Concord Community Music School drop by to sit in. Coming out? Bring your horn!
OK, OK, that’s it for now….more later. Must sleep.
