    Zach and Klax keep Jimmy amused

    Here we cruise into the new year! January’s flying by at a rapid clip but things are starting to get in a good groove. School’s back. Students are back. The CCMS Ensemble is cooking and getting ready for their recital. There’s some great music on the horizon for this saxophonist. Here’s a taste.
    Saturday, January 14, 8PM – Combo Sabroso – The Dance Hall, Kittery, ME – It’s been a while since the Sabroso-ites rocked Kittery. This time around we’ll have band leader Matt Jenson at the helm, Alex Alvear holding down the bass and vocals, Pablo Bencid on Percussions, a special guest on congas, Scotty Flynn revisiting the Combo on trombone and myself; Matt Langley on saxophone! C’mon out and dance with us wontcha?!?!
    Monday, January 16, 8PM – The FTET – The Press Room, Portsmouth, NH – Special Martin Luther King day celebration with the Leftist Marching Band opening up the festivities at 7PM. The FTET will hit around 8. We’ll play some tunes with the Lefties then Press Room impresario, poet and musical encyclopedia Mr Bruce Pingree will drop in for a reading of Dr. King’s “Dream” speech as it was featured on Max Roach’s Chattahoochee Red Album. Pingree will stick around for a reading of Kenneth Patchen’s “What is the beautiful” as performed on the recent Claudia Quintet release of the same name (loosely transcribed for the FTET).
    Friday, January 20, 7PM & 9PM – CCMS Jazz Faculty Concert – Concord Community Music School, Concord, NH – The annual faculty Jazz Concert at Concord’s Arts Mecca; the Concord Community Music School! This is always a great show because this edition of the CCMS Jazz Faculty has been together for many years now. We have a great time working together…and giving each other an extra push over the EDGE! Join David Tonkin on Guitar, Tom Robinson on keyboards, Richard Gardzina on Saxes, Tim Gilmore on Drums, John Faggiano on Drums, Don Williams on Bass and saxophonist Matt Langley on saxes while we explore some original compositions as well as an eclectic collection of covers.
    Sunday, January 22, 10:30AM – Mike Walsh/Matt Langley Duo – Dante’s, Barrington NH – Mike Walsh and I will toy with some jazz standards and whatever else comes to mind while you enjoy some great food and great company at Dante’s in Barrington, NH. This is going to be a great time. I love playing with Mike and this will be the first time we’ve tried the duo format. C’mon out!

    Friday, 12/23, DONKILO!, Press Room, 77 Daniel St. Portsmouth, NH – Kick off the Christmas weekend with a visit to the Press Room for a dance party with Dave Kobrenski and the DONKILO Afro Funk Orkestra. The band will approach Orkestra dimensions tonight too with Jon Lorentz on Sax as well as myself and Randy Roos AND Jim Dozet on Guitar! Jared Steer and Mike Rossi will provide the funky glue to keep us all percolating afro style! C’mon in and kick up a storm with us!
    Saturday, 12/24, Jazz Service at St Mark’s United Methodist Church, 60 Government St, Kittery ME – Every year St. Mark’s and Second Christian Church take turns hosting the Christmas Eve Ceremonies. This year we’ll be at St. Mark’s on Government Street in Kittery. Join Mike Effenberger, Steve Roy, PJ Donahue and myself along with the choir and congregation for a jazzy take on the Celebration of Jesus Christ’s birthday. We’d love to see you there!
